This Division sits within the UK Head Quarters of a national broking concern; a successful and financially secure business that has a team of circa 25 field-based Commercial Account Executives. They transact business of all shapes and sizes, from every conceivable sector, but this team sits within the specialist Motor Trade Division. The business has been a specialist in this niche sector for over 10 years and due to the technical expertise of team, coupled with their ability to command competitive premiums, is regarded by many in the industry as the ‘go to’ broker for Motor Traders across the country.

Indeed, the team is so specialised that it ‘holds the pen’ for a well-known composite insurer, which enables them to underwrite business in-house. That said, in order to achieve comprehensive cover and deliver a truly first-class service, you will be encouraged to visit a variety of insurers onsite, actually building relationships with individual Underwriters to negotiate on cover. As such, this role will surely appeal to those Account Handler and Brokers with a ‘trader’s mentality’ who are a little tired of simply transacting business over just e-trading systems or, at best, negotiating over the phone.

As a Motor Trade Account Handler, you will assume control of a designated portfolio of clients (pertaining to a number of Account Executives), who you will get to know very well. You will not just be responsible for the ‘Road Risk’ element of cover, but charged with ensuring their full insurance programme (Property, Liability, Business Interruption etc.) suits each individual Motor Traders’ needs. Most clients sit around the £5K GWP mark, but there are a number of much bigger clients with five-figure premium spends.

Working in close conjunction with the Account Executives, you will be responsible for dealing with the placing of new business, mid-term amendments, any day to day enquiries, and helping with the renewal process. You will also take the lead with any policy administration, including issuing documentation and helping with credit control. Needless to say, this is a highly regulated environment so it is essential that you ensure all work is carried out in a fashion that complies with FCA regulations and inhouse protocols.

Whilst it is not essential that you have previously looked after Motor Trade clients, it is a prerequisite that you have some commercial insurance experience (gained in either a broker or insurer), and ideally this will include dealing with some ‘wheels-orientated’ clients. You must be well-organised, diligent and with good task management skills. As you will be dealing with clients over the phone, and Underwriters face to face, you should have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. You will also be a strong team player who will happily ‘pitch in’ with any task and be willing to go above and beyond for your client.
