This is a superb opportunity for an experienced insurance professional to head up the claims operation of a successful commercial brokerage. This is a varied and exciting role where you will help to set up the future direction of the division, be the face of the company in respect of all claims matters, and instigate new systems and processes.

This broker is performing tremendously, and continues to win a large volume of clients, both via recommendation and sophisticated marketing techniques (appearing on ‘the first page of Google for many search criteria, it punches above its weight compared to some national broking houses).

This firm controls several million pounds of gross written premium, and has around a dozen employees. Its clients are from a range of industry sectors, but there are several successful schemes giving it a slight bias in niches such a Motortrade, specialist manufacturing, and companies exporting to the United States.

As the company’s sole Claims Handler, this is a real opportunity to make a name for yourself in a thriving company. This is no simple ‘post box’ claims role; rather it’s a technical hands on position, and you will play a crucial part in securing your clients the best possible settlement under the terms of the policy. In order to do this, you will conduct thorough investigations, collating all the facts and comparing these to policy wordings and relevant laws. As you would expect, this includes negotiating settlement terms and, where necessary, challenging insurer and other stakeholders’ decisions.

You will be dealing with a variety of insurance covers such as Motor, BI, Property and Liability claims and to a lesser extent, Financial Lines losses like PI and Directors and Officers insurance too.

When necessary, you will visit clients on site to build rapport and collect information about losses. You will also deal with external stakeholders such as Loss Adjusters, Surveyors and insurance company claims personnel. In addition, you may also help promote the brokerage occasionally when prospect clients make enquiries as to its claims offering.

As a senior member of the team, there is certainly scope to undertake wider duties within the business such as helping manage the office, dealing with compliance, facilities or other duties. The MD is keen to stress that he can make the role as ‘broad’ as you like.
Whilst we welcome candidates from all claims disciplines, it is preferable that you are from a commercial broking background. It is essential that you have experience of dealing with relevant classes of business, so this role would not suit someone who has just worked within personal lines insurance.

You must pride yourself on your client service skills, providing a reassuring presence to claimants (many of whom are distressed having suffered a loss), keeping them up to date on the claims progress and managing their expectations as to timeframes.

As you will be dealing with a varied caseload, alongside other duties within the business, you must be well-organised, have excellent project and time management skills, and be able to prioritise an ever-changing workload.

To ensure clients’ claims are settled quickly and fairly, you must be tenacious, thorough and dogged in your approach. In order to obtain creative solutions, you must be able to think outside of the box and challenge existing ideas.

Whilst not essential, you will ideally have a sound working knowledge of Acturis and be prepared to commence studies under the CII.
