In May 2025, the team at Aston Charles were delighted to be able to enjoy one of the highlights of the insurance industry calendar, with a two-day visit to the British Insurance Broker’s Association conference. Located in Manchester, this annual conference is one of the most prestigious gatherings for insurance professionals held in Europe. Aston Charles Director, James Heald says of the 2025 conference: “It was great for us to network with potential new clients, as well as having a chance to spend more time with some of our existing connections. The conference felt even busier this year, and it was such a good opportunity to see so many insurance professionals in one place.”
A New Era
With the theme this year being titled, “a New Era”, the focus was on the future of broking in a changing world. The conference was centred around a realistic examination of the evolving landscape of insurance; looking at proactive responses to political, digital, economic and climate changes that are affecting the sector in profound ways.
Inevitably, there was a strong spotlight on AI this year. Right from the opening speech, made by BIBA CEO, Graham Trudgill, AI was acknowledged as having a “revolutionary” impact on the industry. AI was discussed in multiple talks and panels, as well as being centre stage in a number of exiting exhibitions. The CFC interactive exhibition was especially popular, giving delegates the opportunity to explore deep fake imaging for themselves, in an AI photo booth.
A focus on inclusion
Happily, there was a strong focus on inclusivity at the 2025 conference. Unfortunately, we still see disparity within the industry with pay gaps and opportunity gaps for some demographics.
The “women in insurance” breakfast was a great opportunity to further discuss career progression and inclusion.
It was good to see a day dedicated to “young brokers” which was well attended – this was a real encouragement, given the challenges currently faced with getting more young people to consider careers in insurance. It was free to attend for FCA regulated underwriters, claims specialists and brokers aged 35 and under, and was a really positive learning and networking space for people in the early years of their careers.
Exciting exhibitions
The exhibitions were fantastic, with over 230 insurance companies, brokers and other associated companies represented under one roof. The exhibition space showcased a range of innovative technologies, with lots of booths offering the opportunity to interact with the exhibits. The floor was eye catching, with stands including a giant floating “hot air balloon” (MS Amlin) and full-sized rugby posts (Allianz). Many of the exhibitors had a focus on wellness and hospitality, with lots of giveaways and refreshments, and Munich Re even offering a wellness zone, with the inclusion of massage chairs and a puppy lounge. We didn’t make it to the puppy lounge, but we believe it was a popular attraction, with delegates taking time out of the busyness to pet some friendly labradors in this quiet area!
Perhaps not as dramatic as some of the other stands, but certainly beneficial, it was good to have a presence from the Financial Conduct Authority, with senior staff available to answer questions from brokers around regulations and compliance within the industry. There were discussions and consultations around the proposals to make changes to the insurance rulebook (CP25/12).
Our Aston Charles team thoroughly enjoyed the wares being distributed at the various display areas, and it was noticeable that 2025 brought with it a nod towards the modern trend for clean living, as many of the stands were giving out delicious smoothies, rather than the alcoholic beverages of decades gone by! Heald asks, “is this a sign of the insurance industry getting healthier?!”
Inspiring speakers
As always, the speakers were a brilliant mix of insurance specialists, along with inspirational people from outside of the insurance industry, who delivered talks on things such as leadership, motivation and strategy. A real highlight was hearing Anthony Joshua OBE, talk about the importance of resilience, as well as a helpful look at leadership from Sir Gareth Southgate. In addition to the sporting legends, there were loads of giants of our own industry speaking from their own experience. These included a very interesting look at how insurance investigations are being transformed by new technology, by RSA’s head of counter fraud, Adele Summers. Caroline Bedford, of EDII talked about the concept of “corporate curiosity” and how asking the right questions can gauge client needs more accurately.
Networking opportunities
One of the key benefits of the annual BIBA conference is the opportunity to spend time with other likeminded insurance specialists. Throughout the conference, there was opportunity for relaxed and informal discussions over coffee lounges and bars, as well as the more formal panels and booths. The first night also offered a large evening reception by Markel, attended by a record breaking 700 brokers.
Next year’s BIBA conference is already on the calendar, and we look forward to seeing lots of clients, friends and colleagues there too.
Next year’s BIBA conference will be held on the 13th and 14th May 2026, at the Manchester Central Convention Complex.
